Director Baltasar Kormakur discusses Beast

Dr. Nate Samuels played by Idris Elba is not in a great place in his life. He's lost his wife, has drinking issues, and he's trying to regain his family.

What I really wanted to do is to shoot this in the wild, you know, so you could feel and smell, and the visceral how it is to be there.  Yeah, you know, there are snakes. There are crocodiles.  It's a real place.

Idris Elba discusses Beast

This story is about a family.  They're a grieving family, led by Dad Nate, and his 2 daughters. They're both teenage daughters.

They're grieving because their mother, his late wife, you know, passed.  I think their relationship has been strained.

They take this trip to Africa, where Mom was from the village.  Perhaps rekindle while they're there.

What we examine next is ... survival.

This is the animal's territory. This lion that's his territory.

He doesn't want anyone else coming in there, and he doesn't want any humans destroying his landscape.

So this is where the bulk of the movie stays on.
