Interview with London band FRANSIS

Today on What On What's Good with Jovin Tardif, I am here with London band FRANSIS.  They just released their first single “Honeymoon” from their upcoming EP. FRANSIS are a four-piece, London-based alt/indie band that includes frontwoman and singer-songwriter Emma Withers, guitarists Alex Scott, Stefan Kotlarz, and bassist Craig Rattray.  Today in our interview, Emma discusses how the four-piece band met, their latest release “Honeymoon”, their upcoming EP, and what to expect at the launch party at The Water Rats in London on 1st July 2022.

Interview with London band FRANSIS

1. How did the four-piece meet?

Me and Alex (lead guitarist who I run the band with) were looking for like-minded musicians who we’re really into the songs I was writing, a few lineup changes and we found good fits

2. How would you describe your sound?

It’s fierce and unapologetic, it doesn’t hold back, it’s honest. In your face at times, vulnerable at others, the emotional intent is always clear, a big thing for me is the synergy between the lyrical story and the movement and mood of the music which is propping it up, getting that right is the key to a great song which I’m always focused on. I always use the word dramatic to describe this music as it’s a good all-around phrase for its balls to the wall approach, but there are so many nuances here. Genre wise I would say we float, we’re all from different musical backgrounds but alt/indie I would say is the best all-around term.

3. What can you tell us about your latest release?

‘Honeymoon’ is a song that captures the essence of being a teen, wild and free with a ‘worlds your oyster mindset’. This song is relatable to most people I would think, it’s about all the stupid situations you get yourself into as a kid, and to look back and laugh at yourself with a slight shake of the head. When I listen to this, I want to just do a Theresa May and run through a field of wheat, that’s what we were going for here, a feeling of freedom and reckless abandon.

4. What else can we expect from your upcoming EP. “Honeymoon”

This EP is honest from the get-go, I picked out songs that had a powerful female-driven narrative, you can expect to cry, dance, and head-bang in under 20 minutes. Each song speaks for something incredibly personal to me, and each song has its own intent, if you’re looking for an EP with it all look no further, It's familiar but also like nothing you’ve heard before.

5. What can we expect at the launch party at The Water Rats in London on 1st July 2022?

An awesome live show! We’ll be playing the full EP live, throwing in some classics, a couple of very cool covers, and brand new unheard material! We’ll also be playing the whole EP with the videos afterwards and having a drink or 5 with fans and people who have come to watch, it's going to be a celebration!
