Interview with West Coast Funk-Rock Band Raincity
Interview with West Coast Funk-Rock Band Raincity
Today on What On What's Good with Jovin Tardif, I am here with Raincity [Clare Twiddy (vocals), Kaylar Chan (saxophone), Ryley Kirkpatrick (guitar), Sheldon D’Eith (drums) and Carson Webber (bass)] The Vancouver-based Rage-Funk-Rock band just recently released their brand new album, "A Proper Latte". One of the songs on the album is 'Wayo'. The five members of Raincity are currently on tour with stops already in Vancouver, Penticton, Kelowna, Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge, and Saskatoon. Other shows coming soon will be in Montréal (June 2nd), Windsor (June 3rd) and Toronto (June 4th). Today in our #cinqque5tion interview we discussed their new album, opening for legendary Canadian musicians Our Lady Peace, Bif Naked, and Five Alarm Funk, performing at festivals and much more.
1. Can you tell us a little about the different members of the group?
Clare Twiddy - vocals
Kaylar Chan - saxophone
Ryley Kirkpatrick - guitar
Sheldon D’Eith - drums
Carson Webber - bass
Our group is like family. Each band member has different skill sets which allow us to make most of our projects in house. We encourage each other to be our authentic selves in creation and performances. The result is an eclectic mix of genres, interests, and explosive live performances where each member gets to shine.
For example, Clare’s dance training shows up in performances. Kaylar’s love of anime and cyber-neon aesthetics shows up in the artwork that she makes for the band. One of Ryley’s superpowers is that he is unafraid to be bold and try new things. Whether he’s playing a guitar solo on the ground or weaving inside jokes into the set, he always keeps us on our toes. Sheldon and Carson hold it down in the rhythm section! Every once in a while you’ll see Sheldon juggling or incorporating poi in our sets. Carson is our resident punk wizard - you’ll have to see the show to know what I mean :)
We have been incredibly fortunate to travel with one of our favourite humans, Pherbie Midgley, who is a man of many talents. He is helping us with driving, sound, video, photo, merch, and more. We love our crew!
2. If you can only pick one, what is your favourite song from your brand new album, "A Proper Latte" and why?
Tough question! We’d have to go with Puzzlepiece whose lyrics created the album title. The song is about people, specifically the media, trying to curate your personality by cutting out the parts they don’t like. It’s a song about accepting and loving every part of yourself. Puzzlepiece is also one of our absolute favourite songs to perform because we always catch people off guard with how theatrical we get. It’s an experience for everyone :)
3. What can we expect at Supermarket Bar and Variety 268 Augusta Avenue Toronto, ON M5T 2L9 on Saturday, June 4?
We have two openers for the evening, Drop Top Alibi and Fluffio, each with their own brand of rock/pop/punk. We love what we’ve seen and heard of each of these bands and this will be our first time playing with them so we’re excited to see them thrown down!
As for Raincity, you can expect an explosive performance with screaming sax, high kicks, powerhouse vocals, and ripping solos from every member. We aim to surprise and energize.
4. What was it like opening for legendary Canadian musicians Our Lady Peace, Bif Naked, and Five Alarm Funk?
Opening for Bif Naked and Our Lady Peace was a surreal experience as it was the biggest crowd and stage we have played to date (approximately 10,000 people). The whole day seemed to pass so quickly!
Five Alarm Funk have become great friends and inspirations for us. They emanate good vibes and have been incredibly supportive of our group. Whether it’s passing along a contact or giving 5+ shoutouts to us during their set - they are so kind, talented, and boiling over with energy. We love playing with FAF! They also helped connect to an exciting upcoming gig in Vancouver where we will be opening for New York-based Too Many Zooz. We absolutely cannot wait :)
5. Describe your experiences performing at festivals such as Rifflandia, Canadian Music Week, the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival, and Bellingham Downtown Sounds.
Each festival has its own vibe but they share a few things in common. There’s electricity in the air. Music fans are more engaged which makes it a really exciting time to try new things or go even further with our on-stage theatrics. Meeting other bands is one of our favourite things about festivals like these. There’s something really energizing about meeting like-minded people, it changes your perspective of what is possible and helps you grow way faster than you can in isolation.
Festivals are just the best, we’re so excited to have them come back after Covid. Here’s to more good vibes!
