#cinqque5tion interview with indie band Post-Modern Connection with Host Jovin Tardif from #whatonwhatsgood

Today on #whatonwhatsgood with Jovin Tardif, I am here with indie band Post-Modern Connection. In our interview we first learn about the different members of the group. We later learn about their sound and musical influences. We also learn about their debut EP, Clustered Umbrella.

1. Can you tell us about the different members of the group?

Yes! Steven is our Bassist, he listens to most genres of music and his knowledge of obscure bands is really interesting. He loves fishing and goes whenever he has the chance and really enjoys reading manga. Tega and Steve have that in common. Tega is our frontman and band dad. He’s big into anime, manga and webcomics. He loves cooking when he has time, and basks in the fact that he finally owns a soft-serve machine. I’m Georges, the lead guitarist in the band. I’m also a tech enthusiast, who likes to play D&D and practice my instruments a lot. Cam is our drummer and he’s incredible! He grew up playing punk rock but ended up studying Jazz in university. He’s also huge into horror movies. And lastly Mitch is our violin and synth player. He’s a big fan of cars and goes camping when he has time.

2. How would you describe your sound?

Well, I would say it is a bit complex. Everyone in the band is really a master at their craft and everything we do is intentional. We also all listen to different genres, which help throw around fresh and unique ideas. Our sound incorporates jazzy shots, exciting indie pop riffs, catchy basa grooves, soulful vocals, and beautiful RnB melodies.

3. Who are some of your musical influences and why?

The first influence I can think of off the top of my head is The Districts. They were definitely one of our firsts, especially with their droney-delay guitar sounds that create a very spacey ambient effect that we love. One of our big basa inspirations definitely comes from Summer Salt. Same goes with other bands; we do share common chords and phrasings throughout our songs. To tie that in, I would also say Early Eyes is one too. You can hear the inspiration a lot in the leads, especially in the tone. Here are a few ones, but honestly the list goes on and on.

4. What can you tell us about your EP, Clustered Umbrella?

Tega and I were actually meant to release the EP years ago. I remember us recording at Tega’s old place in one of his rooms. All we had was a simple computer, an audio interface, a mic, and our ambitions! But, I’m glad we didn't release it. This time we got to record at a high-end studio, shot some great music videos, and had great band moments on the way. The songs on the EP represent experiences of the unique growing struggles people endure on the daily. In addition to that, each song was also carefully selected to showcase our capabilities as musicians. We couldn’t be happier to finally release this!

5. Some of your favourite bands/artists include Peach Pit, Bridal Party, IMUR, Mac Demarco, Little Destroyers, Daysormay, Windmills, Andrew Judah, Michael Bublé, Teon Gibbs and EDGE. Can you tell us a favourite song from each artist and why?

Peach Pit - Peach Pit. The shots right before the solo scratches an itch.

Bridal Party - Fruitless. Intro rhythm guitar sounds smooth and very dire straits-y. The incorporation of the synths in the chorus is also really catchy.

IMUR - Case of You. Great music video! The electronic and r&b vibe of the song is great, the beat really hits hard.

Mac Demarco - Chamber of Reflection. What can I say, the man is a classic and a big influence of the indie genre as a whole. The analog synths in this song are just great.

Little Destroyers - Alpha. I can see myself dancing to this song live. Great alt-pop track!

Daysormay - Everything is Changing. Good vibes all round. Really enjoy the chorus. Super catchy.

Windmills - Babel, Have you heard Windmills? needs no explanation on why we love him!

Andrew Judah - Fear. The intro is so good. It sounds like the theme song for an Addam's Family movie.

Michael Bublé - Feeling good. Good rendition of the song. Mastered the cover with his beautiful voice.

Teon Gibbs - Rookie Szn is a classic but our favorite song is LUV with Makadi and Chill Winston. Absolutely incredible song. The lofi RnB vibes, makadis voice and the sax samples. Song is impeccable.

EDGE - Vice City Vibes. Edge manages to make each song unique from the last. VCV is an absolute vibe though.
