Writer-director Aline Brosh McKenna discusses Your Place or Mine
“The germ of the idea for Your Place or Mine began about a dozen years ago when I was working in New York and needed a place to stay.
“I have a friend who, at the time, was a bachelor living in Los Angeles and he lent me his New York apartment.
“It was funny to me how slightly uninhabited it was and how there were creature comforts that were missing. I started thinking it would be funny if I started to live his life in his apartment, getting to know the people in his life. While I was there, we were emailing almost as if that was what I was doing.
“Then I thought, what would happen if he came to stay where I was living and had to be a mom? I had this idea for a very long time. What I tend to do is let an idea percolate in my brain and then wait for the right person to pitch it to.
“In 2018 I had a breakfast meeting with Jason Bateman and his producing partner Michael Costigan. I’d known Michael for 25 years so I pitched it to them and they loved it. I had worked with Netflix and pitched it to them and to Reese and Lauren Neustadter.
“Reese is one of those people who really knows who writers are. She thinks as much like a producer as an actor. We had been friendly and it was very natural to see if she was interested. I had also worked with Ashton some years back and we had been talking about collaborating on something. It ended up being one of those things where the project coming together was a bit like a magical Rubik’s cube: just a moment when it went click, click, click, and it all came together.”
Reese Witherspoon discusses Your Place or Mine
“I love books.”
“I love authors. Screenwriters are some of my best friends. It’s hard to come up with new ways to say things that people have been saying for years and years.
“I had been wanting to work with Aline for a long time. She has always been one of my favorite writers. She is known for her very funny one-liners and that really can draw me to a character, to a script, to a project. It was a privilege to say her words.”
Ashton Kutcher discusses Your Place or Mine
“Romantic comedies are some of my favorite movies.”
“When you read one that has a unique take and a unique perspective, you just know it. This script had its own voice and its own tone and its own vibe.”
“Plus, any time I was thinking about doing a romantic comedy, I would always ask if Reese was available because I had wanted to work with her my entire career.”
“The irony, of course, is that I didn’t really work with Reese during this film; we have two scenes together. So, she still has never worked with me and I doubt she ever will again.”
Zoë Chao discusses Your Place or Mine
“Minka is so the opposite of Debbie.”
“Her nails are perfectly manicured; she always wears either a stunning or an outrageous outfit and by the way, she comes with a Masters in Differential Calculus. Minka knows everyone in New York and is plugged into all things hip.
“Debbie is a compelling protagonist and Minka starts to really respect and root for her”
“Because she’s so invested in her child but also has aspirations for a better life, Minka takes her under her wing becoming the Ambassador of New York, showing her the ropes, saying stick with me. And let’s find you a boyfriend.”
Jesse Williams discusses Your Place or Mine
“Theo is the one who really believes in Debbie as a talented editor, which she has always wanted to be but has been too afraid to go for."
“He’s drawn to her because of how guileless she is. There’s so much strategy and calculation in moving through New York life and the competitive world of literature and she just kind of shows up and is openly trying to figure it out. She’s a bit of a fish out of water. It’s honest and forthcoming and it’s refreshing. She is without all the pomp and circumstance and just shows up in her little jean skirt. A very loud jean skirt, and that says a lot.
“In the end, he understands what she’s doing and respects it enough to try to empower that and let her have her own lane.”
